The list of references below are permitted to be taken into the examination. These references may be tabbed (with a permanent index tab) and highlighted. While taking the Alaska Journeyman Electrical Theory class does not cover all topics/books used to make up your exam you will be spending quality class time learning to find answers in the NEC, Calaculations and OSHA information, which will greatly improve your odds of obtaining your Alaska Electrical Certification.

Steps to become an Electrician in Alaska:
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid drivers license and either a high school diploma or a GED. Must pass an Algebra 1 class or a Work Keys Placement test and then enroll in an Electrical Apprenticeship Program.
Register as an Apprentice with the Dept. of Labor & Workforce Development
Complete 1,400hrs of classroom training & 4,000hrs of hands on experience.
Pass the Residential Electrician or Journeyman Electrician exam
Then apply for a Certiicate of Fitmess through the Alaska Dept. of Labor
Once you complete an Apprenticeship program then:
Have at least 8,000 hours of work experience
ยท 6,000 hours of commercial or industrial experience
ยท No more than 2,000 hours residential work experience
ยท Have at most, 1,000 hours of trade-related classroom training
Alaska issues certifications, not licenses, but the certifications are comparable to licenses in other states.
The Alaska Journeyman is authorized to install, maintain or repair electrical systems and can work on residential, commercial, or industrial propertires. The Residential electrician can only do residential work.
The Alaska Dept of Labor and Workforce Development administers the Journeyman Electrical exam. The department issues certificates for Journeyman and Residential Electricians.

The state of Alaska has reciprocal agreements for Electrical Journeyman with the following states: Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.
Alaska Journeyman Electrical License Renewal Requirements Electrical Journeymen must obtain 16 hours of continuing education every two years for license renewal. At least 8 of these hours must cover the current edition of the NEC. The other 8 hours can be 'Industry Related' or additional code update hours.
The exam is given by the Alaska Dept.of Labor and Workforce Development
The exam is open-book and takes 4-hours to complete. A 70% is required.
