Additional Services

 Pre-approval from the state IS required to sit for the exam.

  • The state requires applicants to have at least 12,000 hours (6 years) of on the job training under the supervision of a master electrician and the experience verification form must be completed by a person qualified to verify the electricians training or license history.
  • There are no state minimum financial requirements at this time.
  • Applicants with any criminal offense conviction (felony or misdemeanor) must complete a criminal history questionnaire.
  • Master Electricians are only required to obtain general liability insurance coverage or workers compensation if he is the owner of the Electrical Contractor license.
  • A person holding a Master Electrician license may only be assigned to a single Electrical Contractor unless the Master Electrician owns more than 50% of the electrical contracting business.

Texas has a reciprocal agreement for this license with Louisiana.

The Texas Department of Licensing requires completion of 4 hours of approved continuing education during the term of the current license to renew your Master Electrician’s license. The required hours must cover Texas state laws and rules that regulate electricians and the National Electrical Code (NEC).

  • Applicants must obtain pre-approval from the TDLR before testing.
  • The Master Electrician exams consists of two portions and are administered by PSI.
  •  Candidates will take the NEC Knowledge portion first and then the Calculations portion.
  • The NEC Knowledge portion consists of 75 items (including 5 non-scored items) and 2.5 hours to complete
  • The Calculations portion consists of 33 items (including 3 non-scored items) and 2 hours and 50 minutes to complete
  • A score of at least 70% is required to pass each exam.
  • The exam fee is $78 for both portions.
  • You are only required to retake a failed portion; a passed portion will never expire.
  • Topics covered on the NEC Knowledge exam are Electrical Services, Service Equipment, Separately Derived Systems, Definitions, Calculations, Theory and Plans, Electrical Feeders, Branch Circuits, Calculations and Conductors, Electrical Wiring Methods, and Electrical Materials, Electrical Equipment and Devices, Motors and Generators, Electrical Control Devices, Disconnecting Means, and Special Occupancies, Equipment and Conditions and Renewable Energy Technologies.
  • Subject Area for the Calculations Portion include all of the NEC Knowledge exam categories with calculations in each.
